I have a HP Laptop giving me problems, but I don't have the cd's to reinstall Windows XP Home Edition. I do, however, have a Windows XP Home Edition cd from a Dell computer. Can I use that? If not, what are my options to do a recovery on the HP? You might want to take a look at what I wrote on a similar question a while ago here on Yahoo Answers (link below).
The Paragon software I suggested to that user is all free. Or if you need specific files you cannot find after the restore you did, you can also try PC Inspector File Recovery.
The key is always to stop accessing the hard drive (by continuing to use the PC) so that the files are not written over.
Later you can use Paragon software to make complete backups of your system and data (even the recovery partition).

If your computer is fairly new with in the past two years, there should be a program in the menu to create your own set of Recovery CDs. My HP took three (3) DVDs to make these. No they are proprietary and will not work on different systems
