How can I transfer my music files from my crappy Dell to my new MAC?

I have an old IPod that is hooked up to my Dell PC. There's only about 1000 songs on the Dell, but I want to transfer my music libraries to my MAC ibook G4. I know that if I hook my IPod up to the MAC everything will erase. Also, the IPod is formatted for a PC, not a MAC. How can I switch these PC files and IPod to my MAC?How can I transfer my music files from my crappy Dell to my new MAC?Throw them onto a large USB Drive (You may need to make several trips) or use a MP3 player that doubles as a file storage device.
