Why does my Dell keep overheating and shutting off?

I've had my Dell laptop for almost 3 years, and just recently, since the battery became unusable, my laptop has been shutting off from overheating. It does it on all surfaces and when I have different apps open. What can I do to fix this? It's quite annoying that it does this while I'm working on it.Why does my Dell keep overheating and shutting off?If your battery is unusable, you need to get a new one if you want to use your laptop where there's no electric outlet. But if you can work next to an electric outlet, you can remove the battery but leave your power cord connected. All laptops I've seen will work with the battery removed but connected to A/C. Even if the battery is bad, your laptop will still try to charge it if you leave it in, and charging a battery heats it up, which in turn heats up the laptop.

My last Window laptop was a Dell Inspiron and my battery died within 3 years too. The back of their battery has a soft button and 5 indicator lights. The 5 lights should all be on for fully charged when you press the soft button, then one light at at time should go off from one end to the other, with no gaps. If there is a gap in the series on lights that are on, the battery is bad.Why does my Dell keep overheating and shutting off?
My girlfriend has a Dell laptop too, and hers gets so hot! It's shut down on a number of occasions due to overheating too. a couple of months ago it was always hot, with the fan running at full speed constantly and it was struggling to do simple tasks so I decided to have a go at fixing it for her. I backed up the things she needed, then wiped everything from it by formatting the hard drive and then installing windows 7 onto it. I then ran diagnostic programs, defragmented the hard drive etc etc and installed security software such as anti virus, adware/spyware guards and so on. Since then, it's been running much better but I think the main reason it was getting so hot was because of all of the things she had on the hard drive.. it was close to full. She also had Windows Vista installed which is crappy and slow. Windos 7, with a fresh clean hard drive and security software installed/checks being carried out regularly should help you out a bit. Also try blowing some compressed air into the fan vents on the laptop to remove any clogged up dust. Dust is a major contributer towards overheating.

You could also try buying one of those 'mats' that has fans built in.. they will help remove excess heat from the bottom of the laptop. Why does my Dell keep overheating and shutting off?Cooling system on your computer doesn't run properly, it affects laptop overheating and shutting off automatically.

Just Clean all cooling fan and vents from dust. Use laptop on hard and flat surface it can give laptop space to breath and keep air circulation stable. Use cooling pad to help laptop cooling down. Why does my Dell keep overheating and shutting off?
Perhaps a new battery is required to solve the problem. Does the manual discuss this problem.

Make sure the fan is running and the vents are clean. Never use it on a soft surface. A laptop cooler may help.
