First thing you should do is go to the dealership where you purchased the Ford and politely ask them to provide you with a second key. Be very nice and tell them that you would really appreciate a second key. If they decline; ask if you could please speak with the manager. Tell him politely how you went to their dealership because you know they care about their customers, etc. Lay the blarney on thick. When he provides the key; tell him that you are going to tell your friends how great they are!
Ask how much for a second key if they don't. Then ask if he can cut you a deal. Time your responses. Then, if they don't help you; say, I'm really sorry that you don't care about me as a customer enough to help me out with this. I thought word of mouth advertisement was the best form of advertisement.
You can get the key made by a locksmith. They have access to all the information needed.
Although, if you have a remote control key that has a code; some car manufacturers have not released the complete codes just so you have to go to their dealerships. There is a large lawsuit that was filed this month to contest this practice.
This should not be an issue for you. If it does come up; keep your receipt and email me and I will give you the information so you can be included in the petition. Can any auto dealership make a duplicate key for my Ford or does it have to be a Ford dealership?Any auto dealership can make you a courtesy key, meaning a key that will open your doors only.
If you want a fully functional key, you MUST go to a FORD dealership, because the key to operate the ignition contains a microchip in it, and only a FORD dealership has access to their type of 'coded' key blank. Go in the vehicle you want a key for, so they can grab the VIN #, and be prepared to show registration or some other proof of vehicle ownership.
Unfortunately, although ideally the dealership where you purchased the car should have provided 2 keys, they didn't, and you purchased the car knowing this, without working out a deal with them to get another key / remote, so unless you can speak with someone at the dealership where you purchased the car, and they can work out a deal for you, you will have to bear the cost of the key / remote. Cost of a coded key - about $100, depending on your geographical location and how badly you folks are raped :-(, the remote (you should be able to 'scam' one for free - because most dealerships have those laying around), otherwise, it will probably cost you around $40.
At minimum, the dealership that sold you the car should make you a courtesy key, then refer you to your local FORD dealership to complete your requests.
Dealerships typically only carry key blanks for the brands they sell new. It would be a nightmare to try to stock keys for every car.
Your argument that they should have given you 2 keys is valid, but you should have made the purchase conditional on that. Can any auto dealership make a duplicate key for my Ford or does it have to be a Ford dealership? It depends if the vehicle is equipped with PATS or not..If you have a red blinking light or light the blinks theft when the car is off, you have PATS System and a dealer or someone with a IDS will have to program the keys. Can any auto dealership make a duplicate key for my Ford or does it have to be a Ford dealership?
