Question about Tagalog, please help.?

Im in my fourth month of learning tagalog. I'm teaching myself by using translators online. I'm stuck on something though

What is the difference between%26gt;

"Salamat po" -and- "salamat" (how does "po" change this phrase?)

another question, why is there two or more ways to say a word. such as....

Ikinalulung kot = sorry

Pansensya na = sorry

why is there two words for sorry, what is the difference in use for these words?

Question about Tagalog, please help.?
we use "po" when talking to someone older

they taught us that using po is being polite

ikinalulungkot...

is like saying

"i'm sorry because your mother is sick"

or

"i'm sorry that you didn't get to see them"

pasensyana...

is like apologizing on something you didQuestion about Tagalog, please help.?
puting the word 'po' in the end of a word is a sign of respect.

hindi po = no (respectively)

and Ikinalulungkot ko can also mean sorry, but it really means (to us filipinos) "I feel sad for.." But rarely used

"Ikinalulungkot ko and pagkamatay ng aso mo"

I feel sad for the death of your dog

Pasensya na is used for sorry too, but it really means, "forgive me" like when you accidentaly knocked over your grandmas vase,

you say "forgive me"

It's mostly used.

Patawad is also 'sorry', like during christmas, when kids are singing for a few coins, when people in the house doesn't have any coins, they say "patawad". "Sorry" (but really, it's mostly used only during christmas)

Alright, that's about all that we use. Nothing else. Sorry, is mostly "pasensya na".

good luck
